5/5/2010 Fishing Tournaments Lure Anglers to Edisto

Edisto Island, S.C. – This summer, anglers will descend upon Edisto, a quiet coastal island destination in the South Carolina Lowcountry, to demonstrate their fishing prowess. The first annual Edisto Beach Offshore Challenge, hosted by Buck’s Pizza, is scheduled for May 21-22, while the 22nd annual Edisto Marina Billfish Tournament, held as part of the annual S.C. Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series, will take place from July 28 – July 31. To wrap up the season, the Southern Kingfish Association (SKA) Division Three – Edisto Beach Buck’s Pizza King Mackerel Tournament will be held during the first weekend in September.

In late May, Buck’s Pizza will host the first annual Edisto Beach Offshore Challenge. Starting on Friday, May 21, with registration from 4:00 – 7:30 p.m., at Buck’s Pizza, located at 114A Jungle Road, this is a “no check-out” tournament with no boundaries. The only requirement is that all participants check in with the tournament director by 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 22, to weigh their fish. The entry fee is $300 per boat. Following the weigh-in, cash prizes will be awarded. The tournament pays one place for every 10 boats for a total payout of over $10,000 (based on 50 boats). Set in a rare, sparsely-developed corner of the world, Edisto, with its vast green spaces, ancient live oaks, wide open marsh views, and quiet, pristine beach, offers a coastal island experience uncommon today among Eastern seaboard communities. Visitors and residents arrive under a live oak canopy via Highway 174, recently designated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as a National Scenic Byway. Here, there’s a slower pace of life, coupled with a broad range of year-round recreational activities, all set in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. This is the coastal island destination that is said to offer its own “state of mind…any time, any season.” For more information, please call the Edisto Chamber of Commerce at 843-869-3867 or 1-888-333-2781 or visit
