November 14th turned out to be a beautiful day on Edisto for this year’s 9th Annual Edisto Beach 5K run and 1M fun run/walk. You could not have asked for better weather on a Saturday in mid-November. 104 participants were registered across the 5K run and 1M walk, ranging in age from 5 to 72.
Edisto, like everywhere else in the world it seems, has been under an event/gathering ban for what has felt like forever…especially to a small town where so many travel to vacation and leave their worries behind. Through some COVID modifications to the normal event process, the Edisto Chamber was able to host a race that allowed people to get out and have fun while focusing on everyone’s safety first and foremost.
The 5K began at 8:30am with a staggered chip start. Runners lined up in groups of 3-4 spaced six feet apart. They were sent across the start line in 10 second intervals and each person’s time began when they crossed the start line. The award ceremony where people normally gathered was cancelled. However, participants were able to pick up their certificates and medals after the race where they had their picture taken to celebrate their victories.
Medals were given out across several categories:
- 5K Run: Male & Female First Place in each age group; and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Overall
- 1 Mile Run/Walk: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Overall
Age Groups: 14 and under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+
For the male group, 1st Place Overall went to Payton Bullock (age 14), 2nd Place Overall went to Jason Cox (age 43), and 3rd Place Overall went to Chad Corbett (age 41).
For the female group, 1st Place Overall went to Hannah Vroon (age 15), 2nd Place Overall went to Amelia Carson (age 17), and 3rd Place Overall went to Kirra Borg (age 13).
